# Lumiere

*Smart contracts and a dApp for tokenised film and fashion collectibles*

[Lumiere](https://lumiereproject.io/) was founded in Hong Kong in 2016 by Dr.
Patrice Poujol, who completed a PhD on blockchain and creative industries at
City University of Hong Kong's School of Creative Media.
Poujol had spent twenty years across film finance, fintech,
and creative consultancy before Lumiere,
and had previously tokenised the first film investment ever
(the Algerian indie *Papicha*) with Finfabrik in 2019.
Lumiere's pitch is the next iteration of that thesis:
a marketplace for unique film and fashion collectibles, backed by NFTs,
that lets fans own a piece of the productions they care about.

The longer-term ambition is the Lumiverse,
an integrated NFT-powered metaverse aimed at the age-old problem of transparency
in film financing.
The idea is to let professionals
and audiences connect through immersive experiences, transact,
and collaborate on creative projects in a trust-based context,
bringing decentralisation to the creative industry
and pulling audiences into the films, animations, series,
and immersive shows they care about.
The current platform is the marketplace step toward that: one-of-a-kind film,
art, and exclusive-experience collectibles issued
as NFTs by various artists working with the brands,
listed for public sale on Ethereum,
each governed by its own Collector Terms and Conditions.

Lumiere has positioned itself as a gateway to the industry
for top global brands, with names like RollingStone, RS Productions, Variety,
and the Cannes Film Festival attached to the project.

Holdex's role is smart contracts and advisory.
Holdex also appears as one of Lumiere's investors on the project's own
materials, alongside RollingStone Italy, The Sandbox,
[Decentraland](https://holdex.io/c/learn/understanding-decentraland-a-beginners-guide-and-review),
Versus Entertainment, and Variety.

## What we shipped

Holdex developed the smart contracts for the Lumiere platform,
covering the on-chain marketplace logic and the NFT issuance flow.
The companion deliverable is the dApp at
[app.lumiereproject.io](https://app.lumiereproject.io/) that lets users browse,
purchase, and visualise the collectibles.
The "Powered by Holdex" footer on the live app is the public attribution.

The launch campaign Holdex's build story describes was carried by news mentions
and a fast sell-through on the rare state-of-the-art collectibles in the first
drop, with several pieces sold within minutes of going live.

## The Cannes 2022 Kenzo Takada drop

The platform's first major outing was an NFT token sale staged at the 75th
Cannes Film Festival in 2022, built to bring one of the most powerful names in
fashion into the NFT and metaverse world.
Holdex delivered an integrated, tailor-made solution across three parts:
an NFT marketplace to run the initial sale,
a metaverse exhibition celebrating a Kenzo Takada tribute,
and secondary-market support.

### NFT marketplace

A bespoke dashboard let the Kenzo Takada Foundation customise
and showcase its collection as an exclusive, branded marketplace,
with a UX/UI Holdex designed for a simple, smooth first-time buying experience.
The marketplace smart contracts were written to the ERC721 standard,
deployed to Ethereum, and pre-minted just ahead of the sale;
Holdex ran an isolated security audit to mitigate contract risk
and built everything to be compatible with secondary-market standards.
Token holders could access their NFTs in MetaMask
and trade them freely on OpenSea with custom listing options such as auction
or fixed price.

### Metaverse exhibition

Working with Kenzo and the Decentraland Foundation,
Holdex translated Lumiere's vision into an interactive,
richly detailed building in the Decentraland metaverse
that walked visitors through Kenzo's life and journey.
Its release was timed to a real-life event Lumiere hosted at Cannes,
covered by RollingStone, Variety, and others.

### Secondary market

After the initial sale, holders could place their NFTs inside the building,
letting any visitor to the exhibition click
and buy them directly on the secondary market.

### The result

The drop landed with high-calibre brands attached, including Kenzo Takada,
Decentraland, RollingStone, Variety, Cineverse, and BlockbusterDAO.
The ultra-rare NFTs sold out within a few hours,
the metaverse event and experience drew thousands of visitors,
and Lumiere's House of Kenzo went on to win best metaverse at the 25th Luchon TV
Festival.

## The story

Lumiere raised $300,000 from Animoca Brands and Brinc, announced on April 14th,
2022.
The pipeline at the funding announcement included a Ryan Reynolds *Buried* China
remake, a Kenzo Takada series, Cannes-bound projects backed by Canal+ and Wild
Bunch, and *The Infinite Machine* via Versus Entertainment.
Holdex's part of the story was the on-chain marketplace layer: smart contracts,
NFT issuance, and the dApp surface that carried the collectible drops.
