If you've ever sent ERC-20 tokens to an exchange deposit address and watched them vanish, you know wallet choice is not a detail. Before receiving any ERC20 tokens, you need to have a secure and compatible wallet to keep these tokens. There are many wallets for cryptocurrencies, but not all are compatible with ERC20 Standard Tokens.

- What protects your tokens is control of the private key, not the particular app. Any compatible wallet can access an address once you hold its key.
- Prefer a wallet where you control those keys. A custodial exchange account can work, but only if that exchange supports the exact token and network you are receiving; an unsupported deposit is where funds get stuck.

A few wallets that used to appear on this list have shut down or migrated since: Portis closed in June 2025, Dharma wound down in early 2022 after OpenSea acquired it, and Authereum wound down in 2021 to refocus on Hop Protocol. Torus deprecated its legacy consumer wallet in July 2025 and migrated users to Web3Auth's wallet ( migration notice); balances stay accessible through the successor service. If you still hold funds in a discontinued wallet, recover them with your seed phrase in a maintained wallet or follow the provider's migration path.

Note on Atomic Wallet: it suffered a hack of roughly $100 million in user funds in June 2023, so weigh that history before trusting it with a meaningful balance.
